Project Synopsis

Tower Knowe Visitor Centre

The refurbishment works to the Tower Knowe Visitors Centre were varied and extensive. Warm Protection Products Ltd specialist roller shutter systems were used in two specific areas. These areas required minimal sizes in both the box and guide rail sizes, but the requirements for a high security roller shutter system was still critical.

Exhibition Centre

The new Exhibition Centre within Tower Knowe Visitors Centre can be accessed via a newly formed doorway, which required a roller shutter. The main issues regarding the choice of specification were the restricted clear height above the doorway opening, the small amount of room on either side of the opening, and the requirement for RAL/BS colour finish.

The above restriction on site made the choice of the WP36mm Double Skinned Extruded Roller Shutter System ideal for this installation. The WP36mm system allowed the roller shutter to coil into a 205mm x 205mm head box. The high security 40v guide rails allowed easy installation within the restricted side room and the WP36mm system was powder coated to the architect’s choice of black satin finish.

The operation of the WP36mm system is via Somfy single-phase manual override motor with safety-brake and switching via internally mounted hold to run key switch.

Viewing Balcony

The new viewing balcony is to the rear of the Tower Knowe Visitors Centre Shop and provides stunning views across Kielder Water. The balcony is accessed via a new sliding door system. This new opening again required a roller shutter system.

This area originally had a window that overlooked Kielder Water (approximate size 3500mm x 1200mm). The window was covered by an existing galvanised steel roller shutter. The removal of the window and installation of the sliding door system caused a serious issue that Warm Protection Products Ltd had to solve. The new roller shutter system would need to coil into the same box size as the existing roller shutter that had been removed.

The measurements of the sliding doors system were 3500mm x 2200mm. The total opening height from floor level to the underside of the soffit was 2290mm. The box size of the existing roller shutter that was removed was 250mm x 250mm. This meant that Warm Protection Products Ltd had to supply, deliver and install a high security roller shutter that was approximately 1000mm higher than the original and which could also coil into the same box size.

The above requirement made the WP53mm Double Skinned Extruded Aluminium Roller Shutter System the most suitable choice. The width of the doors and the location of this roller shutter on the most exposed elevation made the WP53mm system the most appropriate from our standard range. When installed the roller shutter gave a clear walk through height of approximately six foot and three inches even with all of the on site restrictions. The colour choice was our standard factory brown powder coat finish.

Operation is via Somfy single-phase manual override motor with hold to run key switch.
